Islamic Versus Western Conceptions of Knowledge

Islam has given great importance to knowledge acquisition, preservation, application and dissemination. It regards as one of the uncountable favours Allah His greatest gift mankind. With knowledge, not only mankind can change environment or create a civilization, but they are also able distinguish reality from illusion, truth falsehood other alternatives. Despite value its indispensability, there is lack consensus among epistemologists philosophers what where it comes how acquired. This article sets out to: first, evaluate Plato’s view that “justified true belief”; second define explain meaning Islamic Western perspectives; third, identify ways knowing methods acquiring and; finally, describe relationship between ‘ilm all-embracing epistemic term, following concepts: yaqin (certainty), iman (belief, faith conviction which based on reason knowledge), taqwa (God-consciousness), hikmah (wisdom) ma‘rifah (recognition Allah, things, etc.). desk research draws primary sources namely, Qur’an Hadith, well secondary works concept perspectives. Translation meanings selected verses ‘Abdullah Yusuf ‘Ali’s Meaning except in few places translations seemed more appropriate. After reading this exposition should be (a) perspectives, (b) examine information, taqwa, ma‘rifah, hikmah, (c) differentiate perspectives knowledge.
